How to De-stress in the run up to Christmas

Christmas is a time that we look forward to all year round. A chance to spend quality time with loved ones, eat too much food, and play family games. But the build-up to the big day can be extremely stressful, as business almost always gets busier of this time of year, plans for the Christmas office party get underway, and last-minute Christmas shopping is crammed in over the weekend.
But before you start turning into the Grinch, take a look at our relaxing suggestions that will help you to de-stress and refocus on what is important at Christmas.

1. Crank up the volume
Grumpy office staff threaten to ruin your festive feeling, so turn on the Christmas tunes (if the boss allows it). There is a lot of research to suggest that listening to music can relax and calm us, even at the most frantic of times. Singing along at the top of your lungs is great for stress relief too. Plus, you’ll be having so much fun, that you won’t even notice how hard you are working!

2. Get organized
While you’re busy processing invoices or replying to emails, take a moment to organize a cluttered drawer or messy filing cabinet. It doesn’t have to be the biggest job in the office, but there is something extremely satisfying about taking control of a chaotic situation and putting it in order. It helps you to feel capable and in charge, which is a very relaxing sensation, and it will make things easier to find when you need them.

3. Get outside
This is often a less-than-appealing option, as the winds blow a gale around us and the heavens pour down on us by the bucket-load, but actually, a sunny winter’s lunch break is a lovely time for a walk. Breathe in the fresh air, take notice of the nature you see around you, and walk off your worries. A brisk walk will help get your heart pumping, promoting good circulation in the body and producing serotonin in the brain which will work to battle those stress-bullies. A walk is also an excellent time to reflect, helping you to work out all your commitments in your head and solve any issues that may be bothering you, so that you return to your desk full of new ideas. Just remember to wrap up warm!

4. Take time for yourself
While Christmas might be about making other people happy, particularly if you have children, you can’t do that if you are feeling overwhelmed. Massage is an excellent way to relax and refocus the mind, helping you to get things done more efficiently in the long run. You don’t even need to take time away from your desk, as head and shoulder massages can be done while sitting in your office chair!

5. Take a class
If stress is something your regularly find yourself struggling with, then you might want to consider asking your boss to run a stress management workshop in your office. You will learn vital coping strategies that will help you keep on top of everything without feeling pressured.

This festive season, make time to look after yourself and you will find that you are more productive and less stressed, ensuring that you can enjoy Christmas just as much as everyone else around you.
